In a time when modern fragrances entice you with their sweet, instantly likeable notes, Chanel N°19 EDP stands as a proud, uncompromising masterpiece.
Launched in 1971, just months before Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel passed away, Chanel N°19 EDP bears the bitter-sweet title of being the final creation she both wore and launched.
The name Chanel N°19 EDP itself is kept in the honour of Coco Chanel, marking her birth date of August 19th.

Coco’s business partners and advisors strongly opposed her idea of launching another fragrance.
They believed that no other fragrance could co-exist with Chanel N°5. But Chanel eventually launched the Chanel N°19 EDP
N°19 failed to get the mass advertising opportunity like N°5 and till today sells only a fraction of N°5’s volume.
Still the creation gained immense love and respect from the fragrance community for its bold and elegant appeal.
Quick Verdict for Chanel N°19 EDP
- Buy if, you feel like moving on from the mainstream sweet scents and are looking for a sophisticated, premium signature scent.
- Skip if, you struggle with the earthy, or sharp profiles that are often associated with traditional compositions.
Scent Profile
Upon first spray, Chanel N°19 EDP hits you with a blast of galbanum—a gum resin extracted from the roots of Ferula plant found in Iran.

To harvest it, incisions are made near the plant’s root, releasing an exudate called “galbanum tears” that solidifies upon oxidation.
Galbanum has a fresh, green and piney scent. It plays a key role in No. 19’s scent profile.
Along with galbanum is a green and mossy note, which smells like forest air. This forest air nuance is brought by oakmoss. It is married to galbanum—together bringing a green and mossy opening.
To prevent the opening from becoming too overwhelming, a rose and sandalwood note is paired.
Soft velvet touches of rose with the gentle polished woody note of sandalwood.
The ‘Blue Gold’ of Perfumery
The true heart of N°19 is iris, often called ‘blue gold’. Iris is one of the prestigious and expensive raw materials in history of perfumery.

Did You Know?
Many brands conveniently swap the words ‘iris’ & ‘orris’ while marketing the fragrances.
It is a clever strategy.
The delicate iris flower is practically odorless and the actual scent comes from the underground rhizome called orris or orris root.
Brands simply highlight the flower because image of a purple flower appeals more to consumer than a root.

The prestige surrounding iris stems from the years of patient maturation required to develop its scent.
Orris rhizomes can take over 3 years to grow.
They are first odorless when harvested, later when they are peeled, dried and aged for another 3-5 years, the slow oxidation brings out the soft powdery fragrance from these rhizomes.
Iris can act like a chameleon.
In a fragrance like Prada L’homme L’Eau, pairing iris with musk, amber and neroli amplifies its clean, soapy and powdery side.
Whereas, in Chanel N°19, pairing it with galbanum, oakmoss, and sandalwood makes iris showcase its green & earthy side.
With iris, No.19 gets another floral note—ylang-ylang, a flower that carries tuberose and jasmine-like facets but with an added sweetness that resembles a ripe banana.
It has a fruity-sweet floral note.

Corporate Armour & BoBo
Launched in an era of male corporate dominance, Chanel No. 19 was marketed towards self-assured, witty, outspoken, and confident women who wanted to establish their identity.
Females in No. 19’s advertisements were framed as the captivating, dominant figure who commands the room and attention with her wit and charm.

The deliberate choice of sharp, green statement notes indicates a strong attempt to shift the fragrance trend from the general florals to bold creations.
Chanel No. 19 also compliments a bourgeois-bohemian (“BoBo”) look of the 70s, a refined and upscaled version of the bohemian (“BoHo”) look.

Imagine a female wearing a high-end luxury top, carrying a designer bag and has an easy-going flair. Chanel No. 19 is built for such a look.
Too Old for 2026?
Wearing Chanel No. 19 today might feel like a rare, rebel choice in a world obsessed with sweet scents. Yet, thanks to modern reformulations, its sharp edges have been polished into a smooth, gender-neutral luxury scent.
It is best suited for high-stakes office settings, art gallery opening, elite dinners, or places where you want to be your true self, amongst the crowd wearing sweet fragrances.
No. 19 is for the person who has tested countless perfumes and finally knows exactly who she is.
If you love sweet, gourmand fragrances like Jean Paul Gaultier Scandal or Carolina Herrera Good Girl, you must sample Chanel No. 19 before buying.
