After sniffing a variety of perfumes over the years, I have realised that brand or hype or price doesn’t guarantee satisfaction. In the end it’s an individual experience.
I remember during my school days I had been to Goa for a vacation with my family and during our stroll outside our hotel we came across a chemist shop. We call pharmacies as chemists here in India.
At this chemist shop my father bought a few medicines and along with it a deodorant. It was a brown and orange coloured Nike extreme deodorant. Even though I was too young, my father allowed me to use this deodorant as we were on vacation.
We used this deodorant for almost all our outings, lunch plans, grocery shopping, meat shopping, travel, guest visits, festivals and what not.
It was our go-to fragrance for the month.
During the 90s and early 2000s Indian families used Talcum powder as part of their grooming routine. Not just women, but even men used it. It helped them smell good and beat the summer heat.
In our dressing table we had a men’s fragrant talcum powder with the name ‘Z’. It was a red tin bottle with a black cap and a big bold ‘Z’ written on the centre. It had a very powdery, fresh, musky fragrance to it. There was nothing designer about it, nothing fancy about it.
Just a talcum powder marketed for men. It did the job well
Now it all comes together: A few months back i visited a pharmacy to buy some multivitamins. There I found some new perfumes being displayed on the table.
Thinking that there were some new launches i ended up adding 3 of them to the cart. I didn’t even sniff any of these because there were no testers and the owner was not willing to open the pack for me. Since they were very economical, I purchased all the 3 available variants.
Here is the best part…
I went home excited that i bought 3 new perfumes but not sure if I’ll like them or not.
The next day i sniffed all of them. Out of the three, 2 of the perfumes immediately reminded me of the fragrances from my childhood, the Nike extreme deodorant and the Z talcum powder. I couldn’t believe what I had just got my hands on. It was a treasure.
A rush of memories lied ahead of me, I was very overwhelmed by the experience.
The fragrance that smelled similar to Nike Extreme was Wild Stone Forest Spice, a nice green pebble like glass bottle. While Wild Stone Ultra sensual smelled like the Z Talcum.
Now I pick these up on days when I can’t think of any other perfumes or when I just want to feel comforted.
Today I have a good range of fragrances from one of the best houses, but every time I want to feel relaxed, my heart takes me to these two perfumes.
